Eric Deggans: Why the press always loses hypocrisy debate with Newt Gingrich
Eric Deggans, of the Tampa Bay Times, talks about why the press seems to always be on the losing end when talking about the hypocrisy of Newt Gingrich.
Newt’s mockery of the sanctity of marriage is well-known and just as well-documented. Ironically, he becomes a right-wing martyr if anyone is so “bold” as to bring it up. He cries “foul” and that it is a media-bias distraction that takes the discussion away from his message — and the audience eats it up.
According to Deggans, the news media must strike a difficult balance. The “uncomfortable questions” are legitimate, but ratings are what drive the entire exercise. The GOP debates have the potential to be a ratings bonanza (or so the networks hope), and the challenge becomes where to draw the line.

Gingrich Bets on Attack Mode Against News Media
The New York Times is reporting that Newt Gingrich is using an anti-media campaign to continue his winning streak in Florida.
“With momentum on his side, Mr. Gingrich kept up the attacks on Sunday, accusing David Gregory, the moderator of NBC News’s “Meet the Press,” of distorting his record.”
Accusations against the media are nothing new for Gingrich, and the strategy appears to be working for him in the race to the Republican nomination. Right-wing commentators and bloggers seem to supporting his anti-media suspicions.
The Republican campaign comes to Florida with a debate at the University of South Florida tonight. The event, co-sponsored by NBC News and the Tampa Bay Times (name change… ugh), will be held at 8 p.m. at USF’s Marshall Center.
